Visit A Gay Bar

Gay bar, Malta

A stoic island stronghold of Roman Catholicism might not seem like an ideal candidate for gay tourism. So you may be surprised to learn that if you are gay, then you can still have the time of your life here in Malta.

Just because it’s frowned upon by the church, doesn’t mean it isn’t tolerated. The Maltese are a fairly accepting and pragmatic bunch and the local gay culture has been steadily on the rise. As a result, homosexuality is no longer the taboo that it used to be only two decades ago.

Furthermore, the natural friendliness of the Maltese people will make gay tourists feel at ease at any establishment, or any event that caters for tourists.  Although public displays of affection will generally be frowned upon, Malta is regarded as a very gay-friendly destination.

And while it’s nice to know that you can be yourself in any of Malta’s wine bars, restaurants, or nightclubs, you might be on the lookout for something a little more exclusive while on holiday. If that’s the case, you’ll find that Malta isn’t short of entertainment and accommodation that’s aimed specifically towards the ‘pink Euro’.

In Malta’s party central, Paceville, you’ll always find at least one gay bar among the vibrant nightlife. Aimed at gay and gay-friendly people, such places guarantee a unique atmosphere featuring live singers, DJs, and drag artists for a night of multi-coloured pleasure. Klozet, in Ball Street, and Chandelier, in Dragonara Road, are a couple to look out for.

Other popular venues are Saints Bar, in Hamrun, a renowned haven among the transvestite crowd, and Tom Bar just outside the capital city Valletta, which caters almost exclusively for a gay crowd. O Bar & Spa in St Julian’s is an innovative venue that admits only men, which kinda gives you a strong hint as to what you might expect inside.

Fantastic clubbing events and music festivals aimed at the gay culture are among the many activities held on the island. Annual events held as part of DiversCity Week include the Pride March, film festivals, art exhibitions and forum theatre.

Pink Sundays are held on a monthly basis by the Malta Gay Rights Movement aimed at the LGBT community, while car Treasure Hunts, barbecues, horse riding, and diving activities are also part of the yearly planner.

Also, if you’re looking for some gay specific accommodation, Adams Hotel and Bar in St Julian’s is gay operated and admits only men.  In Valletta, the Adonis Hotel is gay-only whereas the Maison LaVallette, and the Valletta G-House are particularly gay-friendly.

Gay Malta is a website dedicated to giving advice and guidance on gay tourism on the island so it’s worth checking this out before you arrive. There's also a link to the gay bars listed in Findit's business directory.
