Go On A Pub Crawl

Pub crawl, Malta

There are times when one bar just won’t do, and that’s when a good old-fashioned pub-crawl is in order. You may be pleased to know that Malta is jam-packed with a wide variety of different pubs and bars that will suit all tastes – whether you wish to be surrounded by a hearty, rough and ready atmosphere, or somewhere hip, cool and sophisticated with sleek and stylish décor.

One of the best places to start a pub-crawl is in the capital city Valletta. The picturesque Valletta Waterfront contains a multitude of different bars where you can stop for a pint or two of the local brew. And once you’ve worked your way along the waterfront, it will be time to venture into the city itself.

There you’ll find several traditional bars with their trademark billiards table and stale beer smell as well as more modern establishments, where you’re bound to meet a fine selection of Malta’s trendy demographic groups.

Of course, no self-respecting pub-crawl in Valletta will fail to include Oliver Reed’s final drinking place in the heart of the city.  Formerly just known as The Pub, this is the very place where the actor and notorious drinker and hell-raiser passed away and has become a Mecca among pub-crawlers the world over.

Malta’s party hotspot Paceville, is another prime candidate for a pub crawl and you’ll find a number of music bars here that are aimed at younger people. These venues frequently change their names and themes to cater for current trends although one thing remains constant  - you can always be assured of a good selection of bars to discover.

At the same time, some places have survived the passage of time thanks to their tried and tested winning formula, such as Ryan’s Irish Pub and Footloose Fun Bar. These have been part of the furniture for quite a while and will provide you with a point of reference the next time you return.

Other ideal places for pub-crawls are the Sliema Front, the historic Three Cities, and Bugibba to the north of the island.  However, if a proper Maltese drinking experience is what you seek, then you need to conduct your crawl in one of the local villages. Admittedly the crawl will be a short one but it will certainly be an interesting one!

Each village has a bar dedicated to each of Malta’s two main political parties, as well as another bar for each of the village’s highly competitive band clubs. Many of them will also serve small snacks like chicken wings, bread, or snails free of charge while you drink. However, if you’re going during a sensitive time such as an election or the village feast, just make sure that you’re wearing the right coloured shirt!
