Blue Lagoon - Comino

Blue Lagoon, Comino, Malta

To males of a certain age, the mere utterance of the phrase ‘Blue Lagoon’ means only one thing. A dodgy ‘rites of passage’ film from the 1980s famed for Brooke Shields swimming topless but with not much else to recommend it. However, there’s also a Blue Lagoon on Malta, and thankfully you don’t have to fast forward through an hour and a half of cinematic piffle to enjoy this one’s highlights!

Malta’s lagoon is rare, beautiful and worth visiting for a number of reasons. Firstly, it’s perhaps the best and most picturesque swimming location you’ll find anywhere on the island, and secondly, it is flanked by two wonderful sandy beaches.

This latter point may not seem like such a ‘biggie’ but while there are plenty of destinations around the world that offer miles and miles of luxurious beaches with not a person in sight, Malta aint one of them. So if you’re after deserted swathes of sand with a few palms trees, the occasional piece of intriguing driftwood and a few permanently startled crabs … you’re in the wrong place!

Malta does have a few bucket and spade friendly sites, and thanks to some cunning reclamation projects, their number is increasing. So, while it doesn’t score high for sandcastles just yet, when it comes to swimming it gets an ‘A’ - and top of that swimming class is the Blue Lagoon.

As the name implies, this is a location where you will find some of the bluest waters around the islands. Located along the coast of Comino, the small island that lies between Malta and Gozo, this lagoon enjoys crisp, clear, turquoise waters that are absolutely perfect for taking a dip above or below the water, with a small tube sticking out at the side of your head, or with a snorkel as they are more commonly known!

At both sides of the lagoon are those rare, small sandy beaches as well as a variety of interesting rocky ones that are perfect for exploring. But it is the water itself that gives this place its name and makes it truly beautiful.

And what makes it even more attractive to swimmers is that boats are no longer allowed to enter the lagoon, so it's 100 per cent safe as well as painfully picturesque.

The more observant readers among you may have noticed that we said earlier that the lagoon is on the coast of Comino - and that’s a whole different island. So, unless you’re Michael Phelps, you’re going to need a boat to get there. But fear not, there are regular boat trips to the lagoon from a variety of places.

So, either ask at your hotel, tourist information or just pop into any of the many shops selling tourist excursions in prime locations around the island. Alternatively, you can drive all the way up to Cirkewwa and catch a boat from there if you prefer. You’ll find the trips are very reasonably priced making this one place definitely not to miss out on for the seasoned swimmer and occasional dipper alike.
