Chinese Garden Of Serenity

Chinese Garden of Serenity, Santa Lucija, Malta

If you’re getting overwhelmed by all the historical sites you’re visiting during the day and by the heat of the beach, not to mention the lively adventures into the Maltese nightlife, then it could be time for some peace and relaxation. So, reserve some quiet time for yourself and massage your soul by visiting the Chinese Garden of Serenity in Santa Luċija.

Grab the opportunity to soak up some tranquillity by spending a quiet afternoon in the soothing ambience that envelops this wonderful garden. With its most striking elements being made up of rocks and water, you’ll be transported to the basic elements of nature, yin and yang. At least that’s the intention if you believe the blurb and intentions of the garden.

The idea is that it is especially designed so those who enter will go through a personal renaissance, as they pass the fountain representing the figure of birth and leave the stress of modern life behind them. The experience might not be quite so euphoric for the average, less-spiritual man or woman in the street but it’s still a jolly nice place to have a sit down, read a book or just spend some time – and all this spiritual healing comes absolutely free!

The quaint Chinese Garden is situated on the outskirts of Santa Luċija, which itself is quite a peaceful town, and the various parts, beds and fountains were laid out in the early 1990s. Here life, with all its challenges and strife, is represented as a winding corridor at the northern end of the garden.

The bamboo shoots represent contemplation while the great hall represents community. The garden’s courtyard with its fishpond, rock garden, and circular door will transport you to a magical place where even the most cynical, who normally scoff at the kind of 'spiritual guff' delivered above, cannot help but be salved by the peace this garden delivers.

An oriental haven of tranquillity like this may not be the kind of thing you’d expect to find on a Mediterranean island known for its devout Christianity and volatile history? But this place provides more solid proof that Malta is full of surprises.

However you approach it and however spiritual a being you are though, the Chinese Garden of Serenity presents the ideal environment to allow your creativity to blossom. You might use its inspiration to sketch some of the lattice windows, or recite a favourite poem, or simply reflect on the ripples left by a passing fish.

Then again, you might just want somewhere away from the noise where you can sit with a bottle of water and try and get over the few-too-many Cisks you put away the night before.

You can get to Santa Luċija quite easily on the bus and if you’re driving, then Santa Luċija is due south of the capital, Valletta, just beyond Marsa.
