San Anton Gardens

San Anton Gardens, Attard, Malta

Through the summer months Malta’s climate makes for a landscape that’s dryer than a desert camel’s toenail during an extended drought. As a consequence of this desiccated terrain, it’s a country not exactly famed for providing areas of rolling greenery or spectacular flowerbeds. However, that doesn’t mean the above do not exist for you to enjoy. Enter San Anton Gardens!

This oasis on the otherwise largely barren backdrop can be found in Attard and it is widely regarded as a fine gem among Malta’s many treasures, largely because it’s so unusual and unexpected. The gardens have delighted locals and tourists alike over several generations and I’m willing to bet they will for many more years to come.

A part of the San Anton Palace, which is the official residence of the President of Malta, the San Anton Gardens have in fact been open to the public since 1882. Walking along the cobbled walkways in the shade of ancient trees, you will meet the occasional wandering cat, families of ducks and swans swimming in ornamental ponds, and discover some beautiful sculptures and an aviary.

The large variety of trees and flowers from around the world will transport you back in time to the 17th Century when the Grand Masters of the Knights of Malta first adopted San Anton Palace for their summer retreat.

In fact, some of the trees are more than three centuries old, so they might well have been around in a much smaller form when the knights were knocking around. The oldest part of the grounds, the Eagle Pond, is at the opposite end of the gardens to the palace and it dates back to 1623.

The gardens are surrounded by a high perimeter wall, which adds to the feeling of being enclosed and cut off in your own little piece of paradise as you enjoy a break from the oppressive heat provided by the shady trees and spray from the fountains.

The gardens also make for a charming venue when hosting a number of significant events such as the Malta Horticultural Show and open-air theatre, as well as dance and musical performances.

Queen Elizabeth II of England stayed at the San Anton palace when she visited Malta in 2005, so if this place is good enough for the queen, I’m sure you’ll find the San Anton Gardens more than adequate for a lovely relaxing stroll.

They are open from 7am till 6pm between June and September and from 7am till 5pm during the rest of the year. Admission is free.

Attard is as close to being in the middle of the island as you can get, about halfway between Valletta and Mdina so easy to reach by car. You can also get there easily by bus on one of the routes that goes through Attard, or the  Sightseeing Bus also calls here.
