Learn to fly in Malta

The battles in the skies above Britain and Malta are among the most historic and lauded episodes in the history of the Second World War. They represent a time when small groups of brave young men fought against all the odds - and won!

Those were days when skill still held the upper hand over technology and a visit to the museums commemorating the two battles is both an emotional experience and starts your mind racing. Wouldn’t it be great to fly?

We’re not talking about flapping your arms very quickly, we’re talking about in a plane – with you at the controls! Clearly it wouldn’t be so great to fly if you had some German Fokker on your tail trying to blast holes in your fuselage, not to mention your plane's, but that’s unlikely to happen these days … unless you’re very unlucky!

So back to the flying, and where better to take to the skies for the first time than in the crystal clear blue skies of Malta. Maltese flying clubs offer you the opportunity to become a qualified pilot.

The natural beauty of the Maltese Islands, particularly the Grand Harbour, has long been recorded in the annals of historians, writers, poets and painters from all over the world. But all of those people described it as seen when approached by boat from the sea. Now imagine what it’s like to see such wonderful sights from the air!

Small though they are, the Maltese Islands do offer trouble-free flying and top-class air traffic control. The fantastic weather is pretty much guaranteed, which means that perfect flying conditions prevail almost all the time.

Beginners will find plenty of introductory courses with training given by experienced instructors on the latest private light aircraft models. These lead up to or contribute towards your Private Pilot Licence, which requires a minimum of 45 flying hours. Those already in possession of a PPL will have no difficulty hiring an aircraft to roam the Central Mediterranean from a Maltese perspective.

Once installed in the cockpit, you can fly over the popular beaches and observe the geographical attractions of the three main islands - Malta, Gozo and Comino.  You’ll also be amazed by just how clear the seas around the islands are.

Another popular option is to plan flying trips to neighbouring Sicily or Tunisia, have lunch there and be back in Malta in time for your evening meal. Now that’s a day out! And a much more attractive proposition than dodging a Messerschmitt now, isn’t it?
