Isle of MTV, Malta

Historically, Malta attracted the prevailing super-powers of every empire and nation to exploit the island’s position of strategic importance. Today it acts like a giant magnet, attracting leading musicians of all types. From rock groups, jazz legends, chart-topping singers and trendy DJs to operatic singers, orchestras and choirs from the four corners of the world … they’re all drawn here.

What used to be a central military stronghold is today a major beacon for music-lovers, who either happen to be in Malta for business and pleasure, or who travel purposely to the island for the many and varied concerts that take place throughout the year. From Elton John, Sting. Will.I.am and Simply Red to Viennese string quartets, American blue grass groups and the cream of Europe’s opera circuit, you can rest assured there’s something to fill every musical niche.

Every July, a popular jazz festival enlivens the 16th-century UNESCO World Heritage Site of Valletta for three special summer nights. This festival attracts world-renowned jazz musicians and past performers include the Alan Parsons Live Project, Bill Bruford's Earthworks plus Tim Garland, Diana Krall, Chick Corea, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Wayne Shorter, Ian Ritchie, Yellow Jackets, Bill Buford and Percy Jones. Concerts of local talent are also on for most of the year, again catering for all musical genres.

The Maltese musical calendar is replete with concerts by home-grown rock and pop groups, choirs and opera companies, while the many village and town brass bands traditionally offer yet another musical alternative.

Pride of place is taken by the National Orchestra, which was formed in the immediate post-independence period of the 60s. The orchestra's extensive programme of events consists mainly of symphonic concerts at the Manoel Theatre, also known as the National Theatre, the Mediterranean Conference Centre and other venues apart from opera productions in Malta and Gozo.

The National Orchestra is frequently invited by the President of the Republic of Malta to perform in State Concerts in honour of visiting heads of states. Hotels and travel agencies, as well as the constellation of Malta-related websites offer on-line and personal pre-bookings for most concerts.

Those of a much more modern taste flock look forward to June when Malta briefly becomes the Isle of MTV (pictured above). At this annual event, this tiny island becomes a hotbed of talent when the hugely popular, largest free open air concert in Europe takes place on the Granaries in Floriana.

Not surprisingly, what with it being free and all that, it goes down a storm with crowds of around 50,000 people rocking up to see the talent. And it’s been that way since the global music behemoth first trundled on to these shores in 2007.

Previous performers have included Lady Ga Ga (right before she became super-famous), as well as the Black Eyed Peas, David Guetta, Kelis, Scissor Sisters, Maroon 5, Enrique Iglesias, Garbage, Morcheeba, One Republic, Gorillaz and N.E.R.D.
