Learn To Windsurf

Windsurfing, Malta

At certain times, Malta is a windsurfer's dream. The compact size of the island means that when you can't find ideal winds at one place, you can hop back in the car and be on the other side of the island where conditions might be more favourable in a matter of minutes.

It’s also ideal for learners for a couple of very simple reasons. Firstly, the weather - because you will fall off frequently while you are trying to discover your sea legs and that’s much easier to take if it’s 30C and above.

Secondly, the Med’ is not known for its huge crashing waves, which is a big help when you’re standing with wobbly knees on an even more wobbly board wondering how the hell you haul the sail out of the sea, let alone hold it so it catches the wind and makes you move.

In Malta, there are no guarantees of certain amounts or directions of wind at specific times of year, but the two main prevailing weather conditions are: from November to March cold fronts which usually travel across the Mediterranean from NW to SE giving strong NW winds.

These winds average around force five to six, but force seven to eight gales are not uncommon. At this time of year the weather is usually clear and cool and the average daytime temperature is 15C so a wetsuit is recommended.

Then, in spring, there are low pressures over North Africa between Tunisia and Libya, which result in easterlies. On average these winds are from force five to six. But you don’t have to wait for the perfect conditions. Any sort of a breeze is enough to get you slicing your way across the top of the aquamarine waters.

The windsurfing rental business caters for all levels of windsurfers from beginner to advanced, so there is no need to bring your own equipment. Winter wetsuits of at least 4mm are required between November and April. Shorts can be used in the warmer months, and a tee shirt/shorts will be fine from June to September.

If you've never windsurfed before, you can always go to one of the various windsurfing courses that are offered at Beginner and Intermediate levels. Beginner Courses are targeted at those who are totally new to the sport. You'll use a beginners' board, which are bigger and so will float when you stand on them. You will also be under constant supervision while you learn the first steps to becoming a windsurfer.

Only those who have either completed the Beginner Course, or have already picked up a basic knowledge of windsurfing, can take an Intermediate Course. These aim at providing students with all the necessary skills to become independent windsurfers in moderate conditions.

So if you wake up and can see the trees rustling or a flag waving from your bedroom window, choose a school, pick up a board and let the ideal conditions blow you away! As a guide, an hour-long accompanied windsurfing taster session costs around €35.
