Top Five Tips to Keep Your Pets Cool This Summer

15 July, 2024 | Alex Teoli

As Summer kicks in and temperatures begin to soar, keeping our four-legged friends hydrated and cool is vital for their health and well being.

Just like us, our furry friends are at greater risk of heatstroke and dehydration during this time. Many pet owners are unaware or unsure if they’re pet is getting enough water. This is especially true for cats who are notoriously fickle when it comes to drinking water.

All this is compounded by the fact that Malta is the hottest country in Europe, with the summer season often seeing multiple heatwaves and high levels of humidity. At Findit, we sat down with the experts at Borg Cardona for the best tips and tricks on keeping our pets cool that doesn’t involve blasting on the AC night and day.

1. Mixed Feeding of Dry and Wet Food

During summer, it’s not uncommon for pets to lose their appetite. If your pet generally eats more dry food, try adding more wet food to their diet. Not only does this increase their water intake but wet food is generally more palatable for them too. Plus, both wet and dry foods can provide a more complete and balanced nutrition.

Special Tip: Try storing wet food in your refrigerator as it keeps the food cool and fresh. However, keep an eye on them as some cats or dogs may have sensitive teeth.

2. Water Fountains

This one’s really for all the cat parents out there. How often does your cat’s bowl of water just sit there unused until the water evaporates or becomes stagnant? We’ve all been there! While most cats get some liquid intake from the wet food they eat, hydration remains critical with one in three cats experiencing kidney disease and other related issues due to lack of water.

Speaking with people at Borg Cardona, many cats have a instinctively avoid still water as they associate it with being unsafe or dirty. The solution? Water fountains! Cats are naturally drawn to running water, which appears fresher and cleaner to them. You’ve likely seen them trying to lick up running water when you have the tap running.

Water fountains mimic natural streams, encouraging cats to investigate and drink. Some models even come with multiple flow settings as well as water filtration to remove impurities, odours and even cat hair.

3. Cooling Vests & Mats

Borg Cardona’s supply of resting mats is equipped with cooling gel inside that stays cool for hours, perfect for your dogs and cats to rest on. The material uses anti-abrasive material and the gel is non-toxic and safe for pets.

4. Isotonic Drinks

Water alone will not replace any electrolytes lost from your dog playing fetch or from your cat’s zoomies at 3 o’clock in the morning.

Simply put, isotonic drinks maintain optimal hydration levels, providing your cat or dog with a balanced concentration of salts and sugars similar to those found in the body's cells. These drinks also contain prebiotics to support gut health, improve digestion, and enhance nutrient absorption.

5. Neem Oil

Borg Cardona knows that Summer is also the season for fleas and tics. While dogs are particularly vulnerable due to spending more time outside, indoor cats can also be affected.

Neem oil repels and kills ticks on cats and dogs. Simply apply with a carrier oil (e.g., coconut) and apply a few drops on the fur, especially around the neck, base of the tail, and underarms, avoiding eyes and nose.
