Veneers, Bridges and Crowns: Your Burning Dental Questions Answered by an Expert

17 September, 2024 | Alex Teoli

Wondering how to bridge the gap—literally—in your smile? You’re not alone!

Let’s face it — navigating tooth troubles can feel like getting lost in a maze. Whether you're missing a tooth, debating veneers, or considering implants, the options can be overwhelming.

Dental implants have revolutionised tooth replacement and smile restoration, offering a reliable, natural and long-lasting solution for missing, chipped and discoloured teeth. But with so many choices, how do you know what's right for you?

Luckily for you, we sat down with Dr. Jonathan Mifsud from Apex Dental Clinic to break down the essentials on implants, crowns, bridges and all the gaps in between. We’ve got the answers you’ve been too shy to ask — so you can smile like you mean it. So sit back, relax, and get ready for some expert insights.

#1 - Nathaniel, 32: ‘What’s the difference between veneers and crowns?’

Dr. Jon: Yes, so this is a very common question, and it’s understandable. Veneers are thin shells that cover only the front of the tooth, mainly for cosmetic purposes like improving discolouration or improving the shape of the tooth.

Crowns, however, cover the entire tooth, providing strength for teeth that are significantly damaged. Both crowns and Veneers are usually made from porcelain for durability and a natural look. The type of porcelain that is used varies according to the position of said tooth and aesthetics.

#2 - Charlotte, 29: ‘I have an overbite. Can I still get veneers, or will this affect my options for improving my smile?’

Dr. Jon: An overbite is not much of an issue in itself. An overbite will affect the lower teeth and not the upper ones to be veneered, the reason being that they can break. Of course, there are many variables to consider and each case is unique.

The severity of your overbite and other factors like the condition of your teeth and gums are important to consider. It’s always best to have a full consultation with your dentist first to determine the right approach for you.

#3 - Anonymous: ‘I’m turning 55 next year and I’m missing a few back teeth and with discolouration. Is it too late for crowns or veneers? Is there a cut-off point?’

Dr. Jon: The key factor is the health of your remaining teeth and gums. Additionally, it's crucial to provide your dentist with a full medical history, as certain medical conditions may affect your treatment options. As long as you have a strong foundation, age shouldn’t necessarily be a barrier.

But, it’s essential to get a thorough examination to determine your suitability for these treatments. If you are diabetic, it’s important to keep it under control and well-monitored, or else you risk losing not only the dental work but also other teeth.

# 4 - Anonymous, 20: ‘I lost my tooth and chipped another in a skateboarding accident a few years back. Should I opt for dental implants or a bridge?’

Dr. Jon: It’s difficult to answer without seeing the person in front of me. As I said before, these things are taken on a case-by-case basis. Both dental implants and bridges are permanent solutions, but implants are considered a more conservative option, while bridges are more invasive.

Decisions should be based on factors like bone density, overall oral health, and personal preference. A consultation will help determine the best path forward.

#5 - Jane, 27: ‘Are there any potential risks for infection with veneers? What is the best aftercare to keep them clean and healthy looking?’

Dr. Jon: Aftercare is very important. Part of that is coming in for checkups every six months. This is something that cannot be stressed enough. In terms of infection, the risk is low so long as they’re properly fitted and maintained. Good oral hygiene is essential, including regular brushing and flossing.

Avoiding habits like grinding your teeth or biting on hard objects can also help maintain your veneers.
