“Water is a shared resource and a shared conservation responsibility” – Maria Micallef, CEO of GSD.
In the Western world, it is easy to think of water as an endless resource – something which you expect to have at any time of the day with the simple turn of your tap. It’s easy to take it for granted. But the fact of the matter is, water is a finite resource.
A growing global population and changing climate patterns have put immense pressure on water supplies. And I’m not just talking about drinking water but also everything else: sanitation, agriculture, and even the simple act of using a hose to water your plants.
Now consider Malta, our home – the hottest country in Europe. With a growing population of our own, increasingly hotter days, less rain and the illegal use of boreholes and it’s easy to see that Malta has a big water scarcity issue. That’s why programmes like the Alter Aqua Project are so vitally important.
The Alter Aqua Project is a remarkable conservation initiative providing a sustainable solution to Malta’s water scarcity while preserving its history. The current phase of this project focuses on restoring centuries-old reservoirs, some dating back to the era of the Knights of St. John.
While many were left abandoned and forgotten, some were still in use as recently as the early 20th century. The initiative is funded by the Coca-Cola Foundation and driven by GWP-Med, the Energy and Water Agency (EWA), and GSD (General Soft Drinks).
This year, three historic reservoirs have been restored: at Saint Lawrenz Band Club and Auberge d’Angleterre in Birgu, and the Tabgha Foundation in Pieta. These sites have been cleaned, reinforced, and waterproofed, now actively supporting secondary water needs—from watering plants in Birgu and neighbouring Cottonera towns to cleaning the local church and providing water for sanitation at a band club.
During an event celebrated at the end of October with the Birgu Local Council, the new Alter Aqua Reservoir Trail was launched.
With just a smartphone in hand, visitors can roam Birgu and uncover the rich history, restoration stories, and current uses of these hidden gems—there are 12 sites to discover in Birgu alone. This interactive trail helps visitors appreciate the fascinating water reservoirs right beneath their feet.
‘Our business success and environmental responsibility go hand-in-hand. Our operations are part of a larger ecosystem’, the CEO of GSD said, emphasizing the collective effort needed to create sustainable change.
The Alter Aqua Project not only addresses water scarcity but intertwines Malta’s rich history with forward-thinking sustainability—ensuring a resilient future that honours the past.
You can check out the web app here and explore how history and modern conservation come together beneath the streets of Birgu.
