Social media is riddled with tips, ‘facts’ and hacks about how to keep your pearly whites clean and healthy.
Every other day our phones are bombarded with the latest trends and questionable ads claiming to have the next big secret for instantly whiter teeth.
Misinformation has become a big issue in all facets of life - and dentistry is no exception. Some common myths include using coconut oil as mouthwash or brushing your teeth with baking soda.
Even charcoal, which if treated under the right conditions, can work tremendously, however, inactivated charcoal can be harmful if swallowed.
So, the point is it can all be very confusing and overwhelming. The truth is that we all just need to strip it back to basics. Oral health at the end of the day is all about consistency, routine and talking to your dentist!
We hear it all the time, but it’s worth repeating: prevention really is better than cure. This starts with a good routine.
We all know about the importance of brushing your teeth twice daily for around 2 minutes each time, about the importance of flossing etc. But this also means keeping check on what goes into your mouth and paying attention to your diet.
Beyond routine there is also moderation, as in, limiting the amount of sugary and acidic drinks and foods that you consume.
Truth be told, this also falls under prevention because you might think your teeth are fine and not feel any pain, but that isn’t always the whole story. Dental decay and other problems can go unnoticed for months.
This is why it’s vitally important to check in with your dentist at least once every six months.
In fact, Demajo Dental Clinics stated in a 2021 blog entry that ‘the best preventive advice dentists can deliver is to maintain very good oral hygiene, visit the dentist once to twice a year, use floss and stay away from tobacco and other risk factors’.
When it comes to your teeth, you don’t need the latest hack — just a routine that works, a balanced lifestyle, and regular checkups. And if you’re unsure where to start, speaking with a trusted dental professional can make all the difference.
Practices like Demajo Dental Clinics and many others across Malta continue to highlight the value of prevention, and sometimes, the simplest advice really is the best.
