Snorkelling off Malta

There’s something magnetic about a TV screen. Wander into a bar or any room that has a TV on and you’ll find yourself unable to take you’re your eyes off it. There could be any old rubbish on there but you still watch. The only thing that comes close to having the draw of a TV is a fish tank … because there’s something fascinating about fish!

We defy anyone to wander past a fish tank without having to have a peek inside and see what’s swimming around in there. It’s the same kind of intrigue of that makes you stand alongside someone who’s fishing in the hope they might haul in something fascinating from the murky depths. It’s being able to peek into a hidden world!

Thing about Malta is, those depths are not so murky so it’s quite easy to have more than a peek if you take the trouble of plunging into them. And when you do, you’ll discover an active, colourful world beneath the surface.

It’s a great activity, easy to do and relatively inexpensive. All you need is a mask, snorkel and if you want to propel yourself around a bit faster than normal, a pair of flippers. If you are planning to have a splash about in the winter months, then a wetsuit is advisable, as it allows you to spend much more time in the water before you lose all feeling in your extremities but the sea stays pretty warm all year round.

As you explore this underwater world you can quickly learn more about its inhabitants and the rich life to be found there. You’ll also realise why people can become passionate about the underwater world surrounding Malta and Gozo. As an activity, snorkelling is within the reach of practically everyone. The basics are easy to learn – just remember to breathe ... but not when the end of your snorkel is under the water!

Most snorkellers take their holidays in areas that provide ideal conditions for the past-time and for people of practically all age groups. And that’s why Malta has been regularly attracting more and more of them in recent years.

Snorkelling is an increasingly popular recreational activity for visitors with hotels and holiday resorts offering lessons and snorkelling activities throughout the summer months. There are some fascinating reefs to explore and all the fishy inhabitants that live there as well as cephalopods, starfish, sea urchins, and molluscs. Snorkelling in the sandy areas may also allow exciting sightings of rays and various flatfish.

Other organisms that can be seen while snorkelling in Malta include various forms of seaweed, jellyfish, shrimp, and other colourful species. If you are extremely lucky you might even catch a glimpse of a sea turtle.

There’s a whole world down there inviting you in so don't hesitate to accept. If the idea or price of scuba diving is a bit too scary, but you still want to connect with the underwater world then this is the perfect compromise.
